Amber Rose Mocks Absurdity Of Tampon Tax With Diamond Encrusted Tampon Holder

A tampon is probably the last thing you want hanging around your neck. This new tampon holder—studded with 156 diamonds and made of 18k white gold—might be more luxurious than your best jewelry. 

In a new campaign, model and women’s rights advocate Amber Rose flaunts the elegant item with a capacity to hold all of one tampon—it is hardly practical and cheap. 

Released at Rose’s annual SlutWalk and OPENed Women’s Conference, the ridiculously luxe tampon holder takes on the ‘luxury’ prices of tampons and other menstrual products in the US. 

The campaign was created by J. Walter Thompson New York and The Sweet Shop for menstrual equity organization Period Equity, and highlights the problematic way 36 US states still put a tax on menstrual products. 

“This tax targets half the population,” said Sarah Barclay, Executive Creative Director at J. Walter Thompson New York. The Sweet Shop Director Melanie Bridge added that “the tax on menstrual hygiene products is unacceptable in my mind.” 

“The fact that most states still view tampons as a ‘luxury’ is another example of the gender inequality in this country that both the SlutWalk and OPENed Women’s Conference aim to combat,” said Rose.
