Versace Gets Dragged To Court For Copying Lion Logo Design From British Brand

An indie British brand is dragging Versace to court for ripping off its design. 

The company, No Fixed Abode (NFA), has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Versace for replicating its lion doorknocker logo with a ring in its mouth, which Versace has used across its clothing line. 

Emma Mann, founder of the company, has been using the logo on her “luxury streetwear” products since 2013, and she noticed a striking resemblance between her branding and Versace’s. 

Mann initially reached out to Versace, by having her attorneys notify the company of NFA’s rights to the lion logo. Versace still continued using it anyway. Unfortunately, both parties could not resolve the matter, and in Mann’s words, she claimed that this is “years of Versace’s stalling tactics.” 

After receiving trademark registration on 30 January 2018 from the European Union Trademark Office (EUIPO), Mann is now coming after the luxury brand and has filed a lawsuit against it, stating that Versace has used the lion logo on 200 different products in its Versus Versace line and main collection. 

NFA said that this is not a “one-off case” and the brand has been using it repeatedly across its garments, therefore NFA is seeking for monetary damages and an injunction to stop Versace from infringing the alleged lion design. 

Mann said that while NFA is highly flattered that Versace is “inspired” by a streetwear label to continue producing pieces to remain relevant. Unfortunately in this case, the boundaries between inspiration and respecting copyright, as well as someone else’s vision and style “have been blurred significantly.” 

However, this might not be an easy lawsuit for Mann and her brand. Despite Versace referencing much from its lion logo, NFA’s trademark registered doorknocker design comes together with the text “No Fixed Abode Individual Anarchism London.” 

Versace might slip away as its lion logo comes without the text.
